MARITIME LAW

Jamaica operates two (2) busy seaports and transhipment facilities, which have allowed the shipping industry to grow at a rapid rate. The Shipping Act 1998 was enacted on the 2nd January, 1999. This legislation will pave the way for the development of other aspects of the industry as it establishes an international/open registry in Jamaica with effect from October 2000. It is expected that the aforesaid legislation will cause dynamic growth in the industry.

The firm has provided legal services to this industry for several years including all aspects of shipping, maritime and commercial ship registration, ship financing and ship arrests. These services have been provided to owners, cargo interests, charterers, ship agents and insurers. The establishment of the international/open registry will allow us to provide additional legal services to those who make use of these facilities including ship owners, Attorneys-at-law who represent ship owners, financiers and bankers.
