About
Livingston, Alexander & Levy began its existence on the 10th February 1911 making it in 2009 the oldest law firm in Jamaica.
In 1911 whilst the machinations of the great European powers produced anxiety which presaged the great conflict of 1914, the Western world was enjoying a release from the convention and restraint of the Victorian era: The Waltz flourished, the Model T Ford was putting America on wheels, man first set foot on the South Pole . In that year the Daily Gleaner cost one penny and the colonial Legislature enacted a law providing for the registration of Trade Marks.
Such was the context in which Noel B Livingston (later Sir Noel) and Harold V Alexander (later the Honourable) became partners under the name Livingston and Alexander. Mervyn King Clarke of Black River in Saint Elizabeth was a partner for a short time and the firm became Livingston, Alexander & King. Aston Theodore Charles Levy joined the partnership in 1930 and fifteen (15) years thereafter the Firm became Livingston, Alexander & Levy.
The Firm now boasts fourteen (14) partners lead by Roald N. A. Henriques, one of the regions leading Queen’s Counsel. Livingston, Alexander & Levy survived the turbulent 1970s although during the period 1975 to 1977 they lost no less than twelve Attorneys-at-Law due to migration, eight of whom were partners. In that period the firm recruited five (5) new partners, Afeef A. Lazarus, Douglas Brandon and Cecil Lopez (consequent upon a merger with A E Brandon & Company) C. Ian McConnell and Angela M Fowler.
In 1979 another merger, this time with Hanna, Cooper & Associates resulted in Paul Cooper becoming a partner. In 1981, Joswyn A Leo-Rhynie joined the Firm as a partner and was later to become one of Jamaica’s leading Queen’s Counsel, and one of Jamaica’s foremost authorities on Labour Law and Industrial Relations.
The former partners of the Firm are: Deryck H.F. Stone, C.C. Sandford, William F. Smith, Ronald George Sturdy, Bruce B. Barker. G.A.W. Bourke, H. Peter Myers, Paul E. Levy, Peter G. Mais, G. Anthony Levy, Gordon W. Smith and Jeffrey F. Pattinson.
